Be a Healing Presence

They brought to him all who were sick with carious diseases and racked with pain...and he cured them.
- Matthew 4:24

Several years ago I was in a serious predicament. I didn't know what to do. A friend of mine just happened to call when she asked how I was, I blurted out my problem and started to cry. She said "I'm coming over, I'll be there in 20 minutes." She came and sat with me. She listened. She affirmed my goodness. She offered me her perspective. She gave me courage to do the hard thing I knew I had to do. In short, she was a healing presence for me.

That's the kind of presence Jesus was. And that's the kind of presence he calls us to be with one another. How willing am I just to be with someone "racked with pain"? How good am I at listening? Do I readily affirm others? Can I humbly offer my own perspective on difficult situations? Does my presence calm and encourage?
- Living Faith, Daily Catholic Devotions.

Whether you volunteer to tutor literacy, or assist transportation to help someone keep a job, a volunteer to help individuals "fit in in the work place"...the goal is to "be there" to help others in need "get through" their situation.

Mentors encourage people from our community and are willing to be present for people in need. Consider that there are people that have never worked and now they are required to work. They may need someone to call them and give them that push they need to show up to work everyday and to stay calm when dealing with co-workers or management. They may need someone they can talk to about how to approach a new job or new co-workers. They may need suggestions on how to manage their time with work and children. There are several needs that will be arising in their lives as they venture out into the work-day world, some of these a mentor can be of assistance and others a mentor can not.

Let's take a look at some of the things a mentor can do:
  • give encouragement
  • give direction
  • give reminders
  • be supportive in failure
  • teach responsibility
  • promote self-esteem
  • mediate for the client
